Lobster Lilo

Life is still busy in the PICU but it's going well right now! My patients are getting better and it's awesome to see them go from being really sick to gradually getting better and becoming themselves and acting like regular kids... 2 different therapy dogs came to the floor yesterday and it was so wonderful to see how much the kids all lit up when they saw them! My sick little baby I've been trying to fix for the last 2 weeks is MUCH better and hopefully got extubated after I left post-call today which is pretty incredible! As hard as it is to see kids at their worst, it's really satisfying to get to know their families and support them through a super-tough time and get to see the progress the kids make and feel like you're helping fix them... We haven't lost any more patients since my first day, so hopefully that trend will continue for the next 2 weeks! Overall I'm definitely sure I'm not going to specialize in critical care... I'm just not a PICU personality... when my patient was on the verge of death for his first few days I was on the verge of tears every time I tried to talk to his parents because you just want so badly to give them hope but at the same time give them a real idea of where their child is at... you can't help but empathize with their situation too... I can't even imagine going from having a completely healthy baby who suddenly is in the ICU for 3 weeks now, intubated and fighting for his life daily... So yeah, things are good right now. I had a miracle call night where I admitted 0 patients last night, which seriously NEVER happens. Although I did have another baby who had seizures pretty much all night that were NOT stopping no matter how much medicine I gave her... she also was doing better when I left...

In other news, Halloween is coming up and Lilo is READY! She is a good sport and tolerates our ridiculous fascination with pet Halloween costumes so we found a big winner this year at good old Target! We pretty much die of laughter whenever she's in it.... I have no idea what we'll be, and Lilo probably won't come to any of our Halloween parties with us, but hey, for the entertainment it provides, it was well worth a few bucks!

She's just so cute!

She got used to it pretty quick and was just as playful as ever :)

The face is kind of scary! It kind of looks like it's eating her!

And for anyone concerned that Stitch is left out, don't worry--he does NOT enjoy Halloween costumes as these pics prove:

For those of you who enjoy more silly costumes, check out Ronny and Monika's blog for pictures of Kai-ceratops--we got him a triceratops costume for his birthday that rivals Lilo's for hilarity!

Ok, hope you enjoyed this silly post and have a great week!

Those costumes are hilarious. I love the lobster!! I can't even imagine doing what you're doing right now in the PICU. Just listening to your stories made me emotional. Congrats though on doing what you do and helping so many children get better. By the way, I don't think we'll be moving to any of the Naval bases in the Seattle area next year. There aren't any positions opening up. Yea, we are totally bummed out.

You crack me up with your pet costumes! So funny! I feel so bad for you having to be around the sadness of the really sick babies in the PICU. But, seriously, those babies and those families are very lucky to have you. Not only are you a super-doctor and are the best at all of your doctoring, but no other doctor ever could care as much as you do!

Oohh.. Poor Stitch! He looks so mad! Lilo is HILARIOUS! That is such a great costume. The PICU sounds so difficult! I could not do that as a specialty either. I so feel for you. Those babies are so lucky to have you watching over them. Keep up the good work!
